Our Story

Family run since 1978, rooted in traditional farming and organic values.

Where It All Began

Square Farm is a family run business with deep roots in the Wye Valley. Built from scratch by Mr and Mrs EH and KV Whittall in 1978, the farm has grown from humble beginnings into a thriving farm shop at the heart of Monmouth.

The farm is now owned and run by their son, Robert Whittall, and is home to Ryan Whittall, a third generation farmer, his wife, and our four children, proudly carrying the farm into its fourth generation, continuing the legacy of his grandparents, Kathleen and Ted Whittall, who cared for this land for so many years.

Our Farm Today

Square Farm is run as a traditional mixed farm, raising cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and geese. Alongside livestock, we grow cereals and root crops for animal feed, and a variety of fruit and vegetables to supply the farm shop.

From pasture to produce, everything is raised and grown with care, ensuring our customers enjoy the freshest meat, eggs, and vegetables direct from the farm.

Proudly Organic

At Square Farm, organic farming is more than a label, it’s a way of life. Over the years, we’ve planted thousands of metres of native hedgerows, nurtured traditional orchards, and managed acres of grassland to encourage wildlife habitats.

From bat boxes to dormouse nesting, woodland regeneration to low input grassland, every part of the farm is cared for with the environment in mind. These efforts help protect local species, enrich the land, and ensure our customers enjoy produce that is truly sustainable.

Developing Businesses

Management of Square Farm Shop has recently been handed to Robert’s son, Ryan.

Alongside his commitment to the family farm, Ryan is an expert craftsman, running a range of businesses from timber cutting and drying through to high quality cabinet making and bespoke kitchens.

Square Farm also supports local employment, with a permanent farming assistant and additional seasonal staff helping with planting, weeding, and harvesting.

Committed to Quality

Square Farm spans around 180 acres of land, with an additional 30 acres at Devauden managed by the Whittall family for nearly 30 years. The Devauden site has been recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its diversity of rare plants and natural habitats.

Across every acre, the focus remains the same, organic farming, respect for the land, and produce of unrivalled quality. From traditionally reared livestock to seasonal vegetables, Robert and the team take pride in farming responsibly, while sharing the results directly with customers through the farm shop.
